As of today, it will no longer be up to parents to register the birth of their new born baby with the Civil Registry, as a reformation of the Justice and Civil Registry Administration Law, which was passed in July and comes into force from today, has allocated the hospital in which the birth took place this responsibility.
To start off with, 24 hospitals across the country will be the first to apply this new procedure. However, at least one hospital in each of Spain’s autonomous regions will go ahead and carry out the documentation and registration process.
The system, which will be used for both the registration of births and deaths will be extended over the remaining hospitals gradually.
From now on, hospitals will be permitted to present all the necessary documentation through telematics means, and must do so within a 72-hour period after the birth of the child.
Parents can choose to use the new system, which is free of charge, voluntarily, or they can register the birth themselves if they prefer. Often, registering the birth of a newborn can involve hours of waiting and long queues before being seen.
In order to opt for the new service, new parents must present the birth certificate of the child and their own identification documents. If the couple are married, handing in the ‘libro de familia’ will save the mother from having to sign the application.
Hospital staff will be in charge of identifying the baby and checking its parentage. And, the baby’s footprints and mother’s fingerprints will also be collected by staff.
These are essential for the registration of the birth and must accompany the official application form, which will be sent electronically along with the child’s name and nationality and the signature of the parents.
