Espai de Gats cat café in Barcelona

Cat cafés are becoming extremely popular in the UK and other parts of the world. If you don’t know what one is, they are places where you can go and relax, drink a coffee, read the paper or just chat with friends, but with one difference. All this is done surrounded by cats.

If you’re not a cat lover, this will sound like hell on earth. However, for those that just can’t resist a tiny bundle of fluff purring away next to them, or, of course, on top of them, spending even just 20 minutes will seem heavenly.

Madrid already has one – La Gatoteca, located in Calle Argumosa, 28, close to Atocha – which was inaugurated a few years ago, and now Barcelona is about to open its very first cat café too.

The Espai de Gats is a cat café, adoption centre and school all rolled into one. It is located in Calle Terol, 29-33, right in the heart of the Gràcia district.

Visitors will be able to go and relax with a hot or cold drink and play with the cats that inhabit the area. And if a special connection is made between human and feline, it is possible to adopt the animal and take it home.

The main aim of the Espai de Gats is to try and rehome the cats at the centre for they have spent a long time in either foster homes or shelters.

All of the cats have been sterilized, dewormed, deloused, have had their injections and are microchipped.

Actually meeting them while grabbing a coffee or meeting up with friends is a fantastic way of interacting with the animals before making a decision about whether to adopt them or not.

And, the centre’s founders also believe that it is important to educate humans about the behaviour, health and responsible ownership of cats, which is why there will be regular talks, courses and workshops about all things cat-related.

Espai de Gats hasn’t been inaugurated just yet, but it will be soon. For more information about the cafeteria, check out their Facebook page at: or their web page at: http://espaidegats.com/en/index.html
