During February, Renfe will launch a new young person’s railcard for young adults between the ages of 14 and 26, which will give them the opportunity to achieve discounts of up to 50% on all types of train tickets.

This will include reduced prices on tickets for short distances (Cercanías) and also those for travelling on the AVE fast train.

Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, has announced that this new initiative is being launched in order to attract new passengers, especially those under the age of 26, so that they opt to carry out their journeys by rail as opposed to other methods of transport.

This is despite the fact that in 2015, Renfe transported a record number of 31 million passengers across the country and into France and Portugal.

Pastor outlined Renfe’s new commercial strategy, which attempts to attract new customers and to ensure the loyalty of those whose preferred method of travel is already by rail. The minister claimed that Renfe will continuously look for ways to improve its service.

In concrete, with this new offer, youngsters between 14 and 26 years old will receive 50% off the purchase of any AVE ticket if they reserve the ticket at least 30 days before they are due to travel. Similarly, they will get 40% off if the ticket is reserved and purchased 15 days in advance.

They will also be able to use the young person’s railcard on other types of trains – such as Cercanías, Media Distancia and Avant (regional high-speed trains), and receive a discount of 20% on the price of the ticket.

And it’s not only the youngsters that are set to benefit from Renfe’s plans for future growth, at the recent Fitur meeting in Madrid, Pastor also gave details about the launch of the new ‘Dorada Plus’ card for pensioners.

Anyone over the age of 60 (or 18 and in receipt of a legitimate pension) will be able to apply for a Tarjeta Dorada. Holders of this card are entitled to discounts on all tickets for any type of train and class.

On Monday – Thursday Tarjeta Dorada Plus holders will be able to obtain 40% off all tickets, while on Friday – Sunday, the discount is 25%.

Anyone interested can purchase a Tarjeta Dorada Plus card for 6 euro at any Renfe station, ticket office and travel agency, and they are valid for 12 months.
