Amazon, a world leader in Internet-based commerce from the US, is set to establish a software development centre for Europe in Spain’s capital, Madrid.

The centre, whose aim is to offer support and to develop new operations and functionalities for Amazon Business, Amazon’s electronic trading platform between companies, will offer jobs to around 30 information technology technicians and engineers in Spain.

A representative from Amazon Business has reported that Madrid will be the only city outside of the United States to boast a team of high-level professionals and executives, including software engineers and product developers dedicated purely to the development of Amazon Business in Europe.

Amazon Business allows companies access to hundreds of thousands of products at special prices that range from computer equipment to laboratory test tubes, or whatever specialized material and equipment they may require to carry out their business.

From now on, Amazon Business will operate from three technological centres: Seattle (Washington), Austin (Texas) and Madrid.

Amazon will install the new information technology hub in the same building as Amazon Spain’s corporate offices in Pozuelo de Alarcón, just on the outskirts of Madrid.

The e-commerce giant has created more than 600 permanent jobs in Spain since 2011, either within the corporate offices or at the logistics centre, located in San Fernando de Henares, also in Madrid.

Amazon bosses say that they will continue to invest in this country and its economy long term, as they are impressed with the skills of Spain’s professionals, developers and engineers, their innovativeness and their competence.

The company is expected to open a second logistics centre in Spain sometime in the future and will create further jobs within the company.
