The busiest airports in Spain

How often do you travel in, out or around Spain using air travel? And have you noticed that the airports you use have got busier over the last five years? This could well be the case, as reports show that tourism has steadily risen year after year and the majority of airports have increased their traffic numbers as well.

Between the ten busiest airports in Spain in terms of passenger numbers, only one has fewer passengers now than it did in 2010.

The airport with the greatest number of passengers passing through in 2015 was the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport. And last year passenger numbers were up 12% from 2014.

However, despite this, there is less traffic now at this airport than in 2010 due to the massive loss in passengers suffered in 2012 (-9%) and also in 2013 (-12%). This is perhaps surprising news for the airport that connects the capital of Spain to other cities and other parts of the world.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have the airport of Barcelona-El Prat. This was the second most frequented airport in 2015, and passenger numbers have grown 36% since 2010. In concrete, its best year was 2011, when the number of travellers passing through the airport went up 17.8% from the year before.

After Barcelona, the next three airports to have expanded the most are all islands. Air traffic through Ibiza has gone up a massive 28.5% over the last five years, although passengers travelling to Lanzarote and Tenerife on the Canary Islands have also increased substantially as well at 24% and 23.9%.

It must be noted that the above airports are mainly destinations for tourists to visit. And the remaining top airports in Spain to have expended the most over the last five years are also those associated with holiday resorts – Malaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria, which have all received more than 10% more passengers since 2010.
